The murder rate in Chicago is of great concern. People are convinced that it is getting much worse.
Any murder is bad, but one has to remember that the media reports awful things day after day. Reports of horrific crimes rivets peoples attention and gets them to read the paper / watch the network. And it is good for politics if one party can convince the people that the world is going to hell and that it is the fault of the other party who is soft on crime.
A look back in history shows that the murder rate in Chicago was considerably higher some years ago. It is also not nearly as high as some other major cities.
The logical argument will not work for most people. They watch criminal news every day, over and over, and they know it is getting much worse.
