My friend Sandy Schuessler Wright tracks animal / airplane accidents for the FAA. This is a major problem - for both animals and people - and understanding why they happen helps government and pilots avoid some of them.The simulation photo above shows the US Airways Flight 1549 hitting a flock of geese, which killed both engines, forcing the plane to land in the Hudson River in New York.
My cousin Jackie was in South Dakota, talking to her brother Doug in Tokyo on Skype. So they were looking at each other on video on their laptops. A friend of Doug's from New York called him in Tokyo. Doug made it a conference call so that Jackie, Doug, and the friend from New York were all on the call.
Then the friend in New York says, "There is a plane landing in the Hudson River!!". He turns his laptop around so my cousin in Tokyo and my cousin in South Dakota saw the landing live. Quite an amazing coincidence, show casing how interesting technology has become.
And great that everyone walked (or swam) away from the crash.
I was working on the proposed third airport for Chicago - a massive proposal. One of the early plans showed the development of a large wetland off the end of the runway. Sandy pointed out that this would be a mistake - wetlands attracts water birds - just what you don't want near the end of the runway. Later plans moved that wetland.
