Hyde Park's 53rd Street corridor had seen better days. Retailers were moving away and the storied neighborhood, with its landmark buildings and diverse, proud residents was falling into disrepair. It took more than ten years, but the new Harper Court development will serve as a new anchor for the commercial district and as new office space for the University of Chicago.

No matter the size of the company or its sustainability engagement, developing an effective energy management plan can be difficult. The Environmental Defense Fund is hoping to help with their EDF Climate Corps project. The enterprise sends bright young self-starters into organizations around the country, to help them tackle the challenges of energy efficiency. And this year, the focus is on Chicago.

This region has long been a leader in aggressive sustainability measures. Cook County is showing its commitment with its Demolition Debris Diversion program. Deb Stone, the Cook County Chief Sustainability Officer lays out what the County has committed to, how the program will alleviate our landfills and how she hopes the trend will ripple out to the region as a whole.
